What does a dental appointment include?
We organize our dental treatments systematically during dedicated Dental Days, allowing our team and technology to focus entirely on oral health care. Every patient receives individual, meticulous attention.
- Intraoral dental x-rays: An essential part of comprehensive care. This allows us to evaluate the health of the tooth roots and jawbone, which cannot be seen otherwise.
- Tartar removal and polishing: We remove plaque and tartar using an ultrasonic scaler, cleaning thoroughly even beneath the gumline. We finish by polishing the enamel, which slows down the reattachment of new plaque.
- Comprehensive dental charting: We document the condition of every single tooth, providing you with a clear report and personalized home care recommendations.
- Safe anesthesia monitoring: Inhalation anesthesia combined with a dedicated, experienced veterinary nurse ensures your pet's safety throughout the entire procedure.
- Surgical tooth extractions: If advanced damage is found, we perform surgical extractions. We will always call you during the procedure to discuss any necessary extractions and provide an updated cost estimate.
When is it Time to Book a Dental Treatment?
We recommend having your pet's mouth evaluated by a veterinarian annually. Contact Lexavet immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- Bad breath: A strong, foul, or unusual odor coming from the mouth.
- Condition of the gums: Clear redness, swelling, or gums that bleed easily.
- Difficulty eating: Dropping food, chewing only on one side, or a reluctance to eat hard kibble/treats.
- Visible changes: Visible brown tartar buildup, discolored teeth, or loose teeth.
How our "Dental Day" works – instructions for owners
On our Dental Days, your pet spends the day at our clinic receiving expert, compassionate care:
1. Arrival: Bring your pet in during our scheduled morning admission window. Your pet will stay in our care, allowing you to go about your day normally.
2. Treatment: We perform the initial examinations and dental X-rays. The veterinarian will call you if the diagnostic findings indicate a need for further procedures, such as extractions.
3. Discharge: We will coordinate a pickup time with you during the afternoon. We only discharge patients once they are fully awake, alert, and their vital signs are completely stable.
4. Preparation: Adult pets require an 8-hour fast before arrival (water is allowed). For small dogs weighing under 3 kg and puppies, a 4–6 hour fast is sufficient.

General anesthesia is the only way we can thoroughly clean beneath the gumline and take accurate X-rays safely, without causing fear, stress, or pain to your pet.
Are dental X-rays really necessary?
Yes, absolutely. The vast majority of dental pathology, including painful root infections and bone loss, is hidden invisibly beneath the gumline. Without X-rays, a significant portion of oral disease would go untreated.
Is there a cancellation fee for dental appointments?
Yes. Due to the extensive scheduling required for dental and surgical procedures, we charge an increased cancellation fee if the appointment is cancelled less than 24 hours before the agreed time.
